Artificial Intelligence as a key to environmental and forest industry preservation
There are different types of Artificial Intelligence. On the one hand, systems that think like humans, and are therefore capable of automating various activities such as problem solving or learning. On the other hand, systems that act in the same way as humans. In addition, systems that think rationally, designed to simulate the rational logical thinking of human beings. And finally, systems that act rationally.
AI is present in a wide range of research currently being carried out for the preservation of the environment and the forestry industry.
Artificial Intelligence can also be used to significantly improve weather forecasting worldwide. This technology makes it possible to analyze data in real time and with a minimum margin of error about meteorological catastrophes. Thus, by using different mathematical models, it is possible to offer different solutions to prevent this type of disasters, creating early warnings and coordinating the management of emergencies in an appropriate way.
EXAMPLES OF THE APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION
FOOD RESISTANT TO METEOROLOGICAL CATASTROPHES
Currently, great advances are being made globally in the development of crops that are resistant to climate change. Scientists have succeeded in breeding some rice varieties that are resistant to flooding. In addition, the European Union is supporting a research project to develop drought-tolerant cereals.
One of the main consequences of climate change will be flooding and drought, especially in the poorest areas of the Earth.
THE USE OF AI TO CONSERVE THE OCEANS
The oceans comprise 70% of the Earth’s surface. They also generate almost 50% of the Earth’s oxygen, provide food and regulate the planet’s temperature.
Recently, a group of French researchers studied the influence of climate change on the oceans. This research has been made possible due to AI, from which the French team is developing various 3D models to study in detail the behavior of the oceans from remote sensing data which was derived from satellites.
The researchers analyzed this data and wanted to understand the terrestrial climate and the changes climate change have created for the oceans: currents, increase in CO2 concentrations…
But this is not the only research based on Artificial Intelligence to preserve the oceans. Last year 2018, Microsoft, one of the most influential companies worldwide, launched the Al For Earth project. A program that was very well accepted, and which awarded grants of up to $15,000 for those researches aimed at analyzing any of the four vital areas to develop a sustainable future: water, biodiversity, climate and agriculture.
Microsoft supported very interesting work, such as “Wild Me”, in which AI was applied to combat species extinction. Scientists applied Artificial Intelligence to develop several deep learning algorithms to scan and identify all species individually.
THE ROLE OF AI IN FIREFIGHTING
Artificial Intelligence also has a key role to play in preserving the environment and fighting fires. IBM recently begun to utilize AI to develop the “Bee2FireDetection” tool, which is capable of calculating the probability of a fire breaking out. It is therefore of great help to fight it in a more agile and effective way.
This tool is currently being used 24/7. In addition, its range of action is very wide, allowing it to detect forest fires that are 15 kilometers away. To do so, it makes use of a series of algorithms, in addition to collecting different environmental and meteorological data from the terrain. Bee2FireDetection” provides a very accurate forecast with a minimum margin of error.
This shows that AI can be very useful in dealing with the risk of forest fires and other threats to the ecosystem.
